Emerald Green Living Room & Stairwell — Lincoln Park, Chicago
A Webster Avenue home with a skylit living room, an open stair and a homeowner who wanted color with real depth. Three days later: deep green walls from the entry up the stairs to the landing, crisp white trim, and ceilings that keep the light.

A Bright Room That Felt Flat
The living room has everything a Lincoln Park home should: a fireplace, a skylight over the stair and tall windows. But in plain off-white the architecture disappeared. The homeowner wanted the room to feel intentional, moody in the evening and still bright during the day.
The brief: one strong color that runs continuously from the entry, up the stair walls and across the landing, so the house reads as a single space instead of four small ones.
Deep Green, Kept Honest by White Trim
Dark colors need two things to work: enough coats to hide every lap mark, and a sharp edge to contrast against. We used Sherwin-Williams Cashmere in a matte finish, which hides roller texture on big walls, and planned for up to three coats because deep greens are notoriously transparent.
Trim, casings and the stair stringers got ProClassic waterborne satin in white, which makes the green look darker and the woodwork look crisper. Ceilings stayed flat white so the skylight keeps doing its job.
Ceilings and Stairs Come First
Ceiling repairs went first: joint compound on old cracks, sanding, spot-priming and two coats of flat white before any color touched the walls. Working top-down means no green splatter on finished ceilings.
The stair walls are narrow and tall, so they were brushed rather than rolled, and the stringers were cut in by hand against carpeted treads. Every wall was pole-sanded and recaulked at the trim before the first coat.

Green That Holds the Light
Dark walls in a room with a skylight sounds risky; it works because the ceilings stayed white and the trim stayed crisp. The green gives the fireplace wall weight, the white doors read like frames, and the color running up the stair pulls the whole first floor together.
