Two Dark Rooms and a Move-In Date
The unit was empty, which is the best possible starting point for a repaint: no furniture to move, no daily cleanup around a family. But two rooms carried saturated blue and green from the previous owner, the ceilings had never been touched, and every six-panel door had years of nicks, drips and mismatched sheens.
The brief was simple: make it feel like one home before move-in day. That meant one color everywhere, doors that disappear into the trim instead of standing out, and a schedule we could promise.
Why Alabaster, and Why One Color
Alabaster (SW 7008) is a warm white that reads clean in Chicago’s gray winter light without going yellow next to oak floors. Using it on walls, ceilings and inside the closets removes every visual seam, so a 1,200 sq ft condo feels bigger than its footprint.
For the walls we upgraded the client at no charge to Sherwin-Williams Cashmere, a low-VOC enamel that levels out brush and roller marks and holds up to washing. On the doors and casings we used ProClassic semi-gloss: harder, smoother and easy to wipe.
Dark Colors Don’t Disappear Without Primer
Going from deep blue and green to a warm white is where most repaints fail: two coats of white over a saturated color leaves a shadow you only notice at night. Both rooms got a full coat of primer first, then two finish coats.
Every wall was pole-sanded, nail holes and dings patched and spot-primed, and all trim recaulked where it had separated. Doors were painted on their hinges, both sides, with frames, jambs and stops, so there are no gaps in color when a door swings open.

Five Days, One Crew
Every Room, One Light
Nothing here is dramatic, and that is the point. One warm white, ceilings included, lets the oak floors, the mantel and the window light do the talking. The doors stopped being separate objects and became part of the trim. The homeowner moved in on schedule, and the finish carries our 3-year labor warranty.
